Reporting to the VP Poultry Operations, The Hatchery Manager will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient and welfare friendly operations of the hatchery. They will maintain best management practices in all aspects of hatchery management, including but not exclusively, staff safety, animal welfare, incubation, hygiene, vaccinations, inventory management, transportation and compliance to internal and external audits and codes of practice. This position includes the start-up of a new, single-stage, hatchery in rural Nova Scotia which includes development and implementation of all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Preventative Control Program, and Welfare Code requirements. They will be required to report relevant information to other members of the Poultry Operations team including hatching egg fertility, hatch rates, and other data as required. They will work with the farms teams to improve breeder barn results by helping identify issues and providing timely data.
Health & Safety: A safe site is a well-run site, they will ensure the site operations, machinery and processes are always managed in a safe manner. They will personally carry out safety audits monthly and ensure the site is always tidy and presentable.
Animal Welfare: They will ensure that embryos and chicks are treated in a compassionate and caring manner. They will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to all welfare breaches by conducting, at minimum, monthly welfare audits.
Product Quality: Delivering healthy strong chicks to our customers and providing good communications with their customer base on a regular basis are fundamental to being successful in this post. They are to instigate and or maintain quality control programs to monitor hygiene status, chick quality and complaints. Systems used across the site must be designed to allow traceability from farm to customer.
Budgetary Responsibility: They will be responsible for setting the annual cost budget with the VP Poultry Operations and subsequently report cost variances. They will be expected to review operations and deliver operational cost efficiency savings.
Procurement/Inventory Management: They will be expected to ensure eggs are received, stored, and handled in clean bio-secure conditions up to setting and transfer and ensure chicks are hatched, processed and transported in the best condition. They will ensure the maintenance of appropriate inventories for the proper operation of the site. They will manage all inventory to ensure you have sufficient levels to manage day to day operations but at the same time do not tie up cashflow by holding larger inventories than necessary. They will oversee the inventory management for Newfoundland and Labrador hatching egg shipments in conjunction with staff throughout the Poultry Operations team.
Planned Preventative Maintenance: They must ensure that all machines deliver optimum environmental parameters to maximize day old chick quality. To achieve this, machines must be maintained and calibrated to a planned preventative maintenance program laid out by The Hatchery Manager and The Maintenance Manager. This program must cover the whole facility both internally and externally to ensure facilities are maintained, remain operational, and presentable.
Employee Management & Communications: They will direct the work of the staff, ensuring each person has proper training to perform tasks safely and efficiently. In the first three weeks of an employee starting work, they must have received training on animal welfare and health and safety pertaining to the site. Thereafter, they are to ensure further on the job training as required and maintain training records to demonstrate delivery. All members of their team are to undergo performance evaluation on an annual basis, the assessments are to be carried out by The Hatchery Manager with the assistance of Human Resources where necessary. Maintaining and creating good relations with customers, suppliers and service providers will be essential. Staff briefings will be held on a weekly basis which allows two- way communications from The Hatchery Manager to their staff and most importantly from the staff back to The Hatchery Manager.
· Post-secondary education in Poultry Science, a Biology-based discipline, or equivalent experience
· Business degree or minor is an asset
· Minimum 5 years hatchery management experience; preferably in a single-stage hatchery
· Highly skilled at Office 365 applications including Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
· Good time management skills and ability to prioritize work ✓ Strong commitment to health & safety
· Pleasant, outgoing personality, with a friendly positive approach to employee relations
· Ability to make decisions under pressure
The position operates indoors in a production environment. Work environment is warm and humid and dusty at times with strong odours. Standing for long periods of time, repetitive tasks, and heavy lifting are common. Weekend and holiday work may be required based on operational requirements.
